Wright, Jr. (Charlottesville, VA)--The Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce has presented the Chamber's prestigious Paul Goodloe McIntire Citizenship Award to Harold B. Wright, Jr. at the 94th Annual Chamber of Commerce Dinner held at the DoubleTree Hotel Charlottesville. The dinner was co-sponsored by State Farm Insurance Companies, Hantzmon Wiebel & Company, and EMBARQ. Prior to the award presentation, Paul S. Speranza, Jr., Chairman of the Board of Directors of the United States Chamber of Commerce, delivered the dinner's keynote address. Wright came to the Charlottesville area as a young man and has spent his entire adult life as a citizen of the area. In 1973 he successfully founded and launched Virginia Broadcasting Company, WVIR/NBC- 29, greater Charlottesville's first local television station. At the same time, Wright launched the station's extensive involvement in greater Charlottesville's community service. Wright is a founding member of the Blue Ridge Rotary Club and is active in its many charitable community projects. While he has been active in numerous community philanthropic and civic initiatives, he eschews most committees and boards. In a letter of support, one nominator said, "Harold is impatient with non-productive processes, preferring to work to get jobs done." Still, Wright has served on the University of Virginia Children's Hospital Committee and the U.Va. Health System Community Relations Committee. He was an active member of the Jaycees and he and his business are active in many aspects of the Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce. Wright has been particularly focused on the continued success of NBC-29's "Children's Miracle Network Telethon" to benefit the U.Va. Children's Hospital and pediatric patients throughout Central Virginia. In 1983, the first telethon raised $23,000; this past year's telethon total topped $2 million. Over the 24-year run the NBC-29's Children's Miracle Network Telethon has raised more than $20 million. The Chamber of Commerce established its prestigious Paul Goodloe McIntire Citizenship Award in 1975 to recognize outstanding citizen contributions to the greater Charlottesville area. The Chamber award is named in honor of Paul Goodloe McIntire, whose goodwill set a standard of service that others through the years have reached for while helping to weave a fabric of selflessness that continues to provide for our community and its citizens.
